How Image Color Extraction Works
Image color extraction analyzes every pixel in your uploaded photo and groups them into dominant color clusters. The algorithm identifies the most frequently occurring hues, weighted by how much of the image they cover. The result is a small palette — typically 5 to 8 colors — that represent the visual identity of the entire image.
This is the same approach professional tools like Adobe Color and Coolors use. It works because most images are dominated by a handful of colors. A sunset photo is mostly warm oranges and cool purples; a forest scene is greens and earth tones. Extraction captures these dominant impressions and hands you their exact hex codes, ready to use in your own designs.

Getting the Best Results
- Use high-contrast images with distinct color zones. A photo with a clear sky, a green field, and a brown path will produce a clean 3-color palette. A low-contrast gray scene will produce muddy, similar-looking swatches.
- Crop tight on the part of the image whose colors you actually want. If you only care about the product, crop out the background before extraction.
- Use the extracted colors as starting points, not final answers. The algorithm picks statistically dominant colors, which are not always the most aesthetically pleasing. Tweak saturation and lightness in the Color Picker after extraction.

What image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG, WebP, and GIF all work. PNG and WebP produce the most accurate results because they preserve sharp color boundaries. Compressed JPGs may blend colors slightly at the edges.
How many colors does it extract?
The tool identifies 5 to 8 dominant colors, depending on the image complexity. Simple images with few distinct colors produce fewer swatches; complex scenes with many hues produce more.
Is the image uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens in your browser using Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device, making this tool safe for confidential or proprietary visuals.
