How Color Mixing Works

Color mixing in digital design works differently from paint. On screen, colors are made of light (additive mixing), where combining red, green, and blue channels produces brighter results. When you mix two colors digitally, the tool calculates the average of their RGB values — equivalent to placing a translucent layer of each color over the other. This simulates what happens when you blend two paint pigments, even though screens emit light.

The mixer above lets you choose any two hex colors and see their blend at various ratios. The midpoint (50/50) gives you the true average; sliding toward either side shows how the blend shifts. This is useful for creating transitional colors between two brand colors, finding the natural midpoint of a gradient, or discovering colors you would never have chosen manually.

When to Use Color Mixing

  • Gradient midpoints: when creating a gradient between two colors, the midpoint is their 50/50 mix. Knowing this helps you predict whether a gradient will look smooth or produce an ugly muddy zone.
  • Brand color harmonies: mixing your primary and secondary brand colors creates natural supporting tones that are guaranteed to feel cohesive because they share DNA from both parents.
  • Data visualization: mixing category colors at different ratios creates a continuous scale for heatmaps and sequential data displays.
  • Photo editing overlays: mixing a color tint with the original image color produces natural-looking color grading effects.

Tips for Better Color Blends

  • Mix colors that are close on the color wheel for smooth, natural blends. Mixing complements (red and green) produces muddy brown — which may be exactly what you want, or exactly what you do not.
  • Use the blend result as a starting point, then fine-tune in HSL. The mixer gives you a mathematically accurate average; designers often want the blend shifted slightly toward one parent’s hue.
  • Check the blend at small sizes. Two colors that look beautiful in large swatches may blend into a muddy gray when mixed at small scale on a busy page.
